The Buddha in the Attic

I recently read 'The Buddha in the Attic' by Julie Otsuka.  It's her follow up novel to 'When the Emperor was Devine' which I haven't read- but now want to!  It tells the story of group of Japanese women who are 'picture brides.'  It is so poetically written that you can't help but read it quickly- yet their lives and stories are so impactful they stick with you.  It is definitely worth picking up.  What have you been reading lately?

  1. Ooh, I can't wait to read this!

I've been on a reading frenzy, and just finished "Hector and the Secrets of Love," by Francois Lelord. It's such a great story about the definitions and boundaries of love, and what makes two people stay together, in spite of all the odds - all written in this very whimsical and thought provoking way.

I also started on Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother by Amy Chua, the controversial work that was featured on the NY Times last year. Turns out, it's also a great read, partly because both my mom and dad were tiger parents. I always thought I was raised in a very very strict household, and it's nice to know I was not alone (no sleepovers! Curfew at 8:30 PM, even as a 26 year old!).

Thanks for the book recommendation though! :)

  2. This sounds amazing. I tend to gravitate toward stories of the Japanese culture...I love the culture and find it so fascinating. I will definitely have to pick this one up. Sadly, I have failed to make reading time lately, but when I do I will remember this :) XO brynn

  3. Sounds interesting. I love the fonts on that book. I am reading the Happiness Project, {finally}, I have been wanting to really devote the time to doing "the work" since ALT.

  4. The cover is beautiful! I hadn't heard of this book before but I'll have to check it out :) I'm currently reading the Hunger Games series- I want to finish before the movie comes out!
